This tutorial will guide you into configuring a custom level permission and updating the permission of the crawl user. Be aware that this has to be done for every site collection that needs to be crawled.

Step 1: Create the custom permission level

1. Go to the desired site collection and log on with a site collection administrator (or any user authorized to edit site permissions).

1. > Site Permissions

1. (your user should see this

1. option with sufficient privileges).
2. Click

1. Permission

1. Levels  (It could take some time for it to enable, so wait until it does).
2. Click

1. Add a Permission Level

2. Fill in the

1. Name

1. Description fields.
2. Select the following privileges:
   • View Items

1. • Open Items View Versions View Application Pages Browse Directories View Pages

1. • Browse User Information Use Remote Interfaces Use Client Integration

1. • Features Open
2. Click

Step 2: Set custom permission for the crawl account

Select Permission

1. Go back to

1. the Site

1. Permissions page.
2. Select the crawl account.

1. Click Edit User Permissions

2. Select the custom permission created

1. in the previous step.

1. Click Ok

Once the crawl account has the new permission level, it should be ready to perform crawls using

the SharePoint Web Services Extension.
