With the Community version of Aspire, developers can download and test out Aspire, see how individual components are coded, and get a feel for how the overall Aspire pipeline processing structure works. Creating applications (by configuring pipelines and existing components) and programming new components are described here and here.

Aspire Community differs from Aspire Enterprise in that it does not include some of the premium features of Enterprise, such as document level security, distributed processing, and most of the premium application bundles for connectors. Enterprise (described here) is intended more for production-quality, enterprise level deployments of Aspire for content acquisition, document processing, and query processing.

Aspire Community also does not include formal maintenance and support. However, questions and/or feedback are welcomed and appreciated via email. We plan to establish a Developers Forum in the future.

Aspire Enterprise

• All Aspire Community components and applications
• A full CIFS connector (with document level security), relational database connector with snapshot based incremental crawling, and a Heritrix connector (for crawling unsecured web site content)
• Support for Staging repository
• All other connectors are sold separately and are not part of the Enterprise bundle
  • The other connectors are referred to as Premium and are indicated by the icon  
• All search engine publisher applications
• Support for distributed processing
• Support for content source failover
• Telephone support (8x5 or 24x7)
• Access to SNAPSHOT releases of the software for advance availability of new features

Any time you see the icon at right, it's an indication that that application or component is bundled with Aspire Enterprise and is only available in the Enterprise version of Aspire.

Aspire Enterprise is intended for production-quality, enterprise level implementations of Aspire for content acquisition, document processing, and query processing. It includes additional features that Aspire Community does not, such as document level security for connectors and distributed processing for high-speed, content sources crawl failover over multiple Aspire servers, high-volume operations where Aspire is run on multiple nodes.

System administration of Aspire Enterprise can be done via a web-based System Administration user interface, which requires no programming knowledge to use. Administrators can easily stop and start Aspire servers, add new content sources, install new Aspire applications, schedule crawls, and monitor crawl statistics as data is indexed into your search engine of choice.
